I find these speakers amazingly adequate as temporary replacements for my venerable-but-finally-broken EPI 1200's.

These speakers are hold-me-overs until I decently replace some Epicure EPI 1200's over 25 years old. The EPI's 12" woofer suspensions finally rotted resulting a buzzing when any sound in the woofer's bailiwick comes along.

I found out about these Sony speakers courtesy of the ceaseless flow of email some of us allow Amazon to send us. The deal was much less than $100 and the reviews pretty much said "suprisingly good".

When I turned my system on after connecting these speakers I was pleased with what I heard, aware as I was of some flaws. There is a certain lack of coherence, the sound stage is narrower than the separation of the speakers, and of course they don't go as low as the EPIs did in their heyday. My wife, who has much better hearing than I do, notices less high end than before. And for a little while, when we switch on the system we will be expecting to hear the EPI sound, and getting the low-end sound.

Again though, for what I've paid (shipping was a significant add on because of the weight and the urgency) they are great.

I use this unit at work in my office to listen to Ambient and Classical music. I tried the Pure-Fi Anywhere 2 which was awesome except for the fact that it's auto-shut off feature is too sensitive with the kind of music I listen to and really made it unusable for me. I tried the Altec imt620 which had good sound but had an unusually loud speaker hiss at all volumes that bothered me. It would also reset the volume too high when I would reinsert my iPhone 3GS into the unit.

The Logitech s315i is the perfect comprimise. The sound quality is good, but not great. For my needs (low volume, background music) it's perfect. The small size and portability are great. I also listen to audio streams and I don't have to worry about it shutting down for no reason. There is no speaker hiss either. It is really just an extension of the iPhone's built in speakers. No bells and whistles, just a basic, solid, decent sounding speaker.

I do believe that it is a little overpriced for what you get. Having no remote control is disappointing too, but not a deal breaker for me.

I would have given it 5 stars, but the less than perfect sound, no remote control and high price tag keeps it from getting the highest rating in my book.

Bottom Line - if you just need a good, portable, no frills speaker set that lets you have all the control and if you aren't an audiophile, then this is the unit for you.

But here's the thing, for some reason, using my PC and other small devices I preferred the z-2300 over the z-5500. I live in a 2900 square foot home and even when I'm in the opposite end, the bass from z-2300 could still be heard and felt. So here are the test results when I made these brothers fight:

A hunnerd bucks. Come on, folks, you aren't going to get Magneplanars for twenty Lincolns. What you will get is a nice, smooth 2.1 system with several distinct advantages not related at all to the excellent sound quality..

1. Nice big volume control, with a boom-knob to boot, and a power button, and a headphone jack. Seriously, that nice big volume control is worth something. My wife had these speaks on her PC, and when I swapped the Z2300s out for something smaller, she damn near filed for divorce. She misses her big old volume control.

2. The sub is big enough and deep enough to double as a PC stand. It's important to get your puter off the floor, and this does it, to the tune of 10".

3. You can take the grilles off and go all Darth Vader Geek on your office space.

And they sound great. They play loud without irritation. Midrange a bit dim? That's why God made equalizers, d00d.

An aux input, like Logitech puts on their later models, would be icing on the cake, but that's a minor kibbitz.

All i have to say is Boss eat your heart out, they beat you in price and quality. i liked these speakers so much i bought another. If you like any kind of music you will like these, THX-Certified tells it all. i personally like lots of bass, these were no disappointment, I've pissed off my neighbors many times. Cristal clear sound all around.

Ok first the mid problem is just a matter of taste and can be easily altered. i had a small problem with the fuse cap, it kept popping out and i called Logitech about it. They replace the entire system without a hitch and were very friendly and helpful. Haven't had any problem since, and i have been very aggressive with them for over a year. If your like me and you have a tv with a headphone jacks you can use them for a great sound upgrade. Yes, the sub and amplifier box is a little big, just do what i do, use it as foot rest.
