This set of THX-certified speakers is the only one at the time of this writing to have achieved cnet.com's 'Spectacular' rating, better than any other set of computer speakers. This is among the many superlatives these speakers have received both by professional and consumer reviewers.
Once you set them up (which is a breeze), turn on your computer's sound system, and sit back (or stand back -- you may need to), it's easy to hear why these are so highly rated. The bass is just amazingly clear and powerful, yet clean and I've never had a balance problem between the subwoofer and the satellites. The handy remote allows you to adjust the bass, but more refined adjustments can be made in your media player's equalizer and I've found these adjustments are a slight improvement over the system's default balance. Although these are likely aimed at the video game set (for which they are perfect), they are wonderful for my purposes: Listening to music while I work and study. Classical, pop, rock, jazz -- everything sounds fantastic, especially vocal music. These speakers put some surround sound home theater sets to shame.
I live in a condominium and even halfway up, these are far more than adequate; were I to increase the volume beyond halfway, I would have bleeding ears and very angry neighbors. But the sound is not only powerful, it is rich and clear with an amazing amount of depth. I cannot believe such small satellites produce such a beautiful sound. These speakers are comparable to Klipsch Promedia speakers, yet have scored even higher ratings and all with an apparently superior reliability record (if consumer reviews are to be believed). I was considering the Klipsch GMX set, but went with these when I read about repeated problems and I can't imagine a better set.
From what I can tell, these speakers have come down in price considerably and I purchased my set for about $78. I was considering the Z-4 2.1 set, but when I factored shipping/handling and taxes, the difference between the Z-4 set (also highly rated, but only 40 watts as compared to this set's 200 watts) was only $20, rendering my decision a no-brainer. This set also looks great -- very sleek and modern.
Highly recommended. Get more detail about Logitech Z-2300 THX-Certified 200-Watt 2.1 Speaker System (Silver).
