I wanted to get rid of my ancient Infinity surround speakers hanging out of the middle of my living room ceiling. The whole thinking about surround has also changed over the past decade and rear speakers are no longer looked at as low-powered speakers used to just round out the sound but rather as important components in faithfully reproducing the dedicated signals sent via today's 5.1/7.1 systems. In other words, 3-inch drivers with a peak of 75W was no longer acceptable.

I looked at a wide range of flush-mount speakers from the higher end on the money spectrum as far as my budget (Energy, Klipsch) to the low (AudioSource, Pyle) and everything in between. I had almost settled on some Polks when I saw a listing for these 6.5 inch Muros and did some research on them. The range on these BICs was better on the low end (down to 40Hz and opposed to 55Hz) and the power was slightly higher (125W to 100W). I've had a pair of bookshelf speakers from BIC for a long time that are still going strong so I decided to give these a shot; it was really a no-lose situation getting a $300 pair of speakers for such a low price. Also, the Florida sun beats down on our roof in the summer and the attic temperatures get amazingly hot to I figured going with a weather-resistant speaker wouldn't be a bad thing, either.

Very happy with these. I noticed as soon as they were delivered that they had a nice weight to them due to the substantial hardware and magnets. The posts are gold-plated and the cones are a tough polygraphite. Installing them couldn't have been easier - push one or two of the screws from behind to release the grill, cut a hole in the ceiling using the included template, attach the speaker wire, place the speaker into the hole and simply tighten the 4 screws. Done. Took all of 20 minutes. Another nice touch was the inclusion of two sets of grills - one paintable metal pair and another pair that is covered with white fabric. I went with the fabric but the metal looks fine as well.

I ran full stereo through them for a few days to break them in with some CDs and they really do sound wonderful. I didn't expect such a rich sound from 6.5s but, paired with a subwoofer, they are proving quite capable. Not audiophile by any means, but I'd say they sound just as good as the $400 Polks I tested. I wouldn't hesitate to use these outside on the deck or in the ceiling if wiring a different room in the house. As far as surround sound with DVDs, they reveal so much more than the small Infinity pair they replaced - much fuller spectrum, and the highs are clean with the tweeters aimed toward the couches in front of them.

For $300/pair, these are very good speakers - every bit as good as the Polks, in my opinion and actually better going purely off the specs. But for $77/pair?!? You'd be crazy not to grab these. I bought a pair of 901 Series VI back in 1990, from the PX on post in Bamberg, Germany. I didn't really know much about A/V equipment then, but I figured, Hey, they're expensive, they must be good. I was right on both counts. And 19 years later, they still sound as good as they did the day that I bought them. While I certainly haven't listened to every high end speaker out there, I don't think one can do much better. Yes, you have plenty of people out there that'll spout off the quip, No highs, no lows - must be Bose. I couldn't disagree more. Most of these people compared the 901s to the speakers they bought only at the store and never looked back. But at most A/V stores, A. the 901s usually aren't set up like they need to be for their optimum sound, and B. yeah, their speakers might have sounded pretty good directly in front and center of them - the proverbial sweet spot - but did they compare them from the back of the room? The corner of the room? Probably not. That's the first caveat, though. When you get your 901s, read the manual. Twice. And get out a measuring tape. 901s have to be placed fairly precisely to get the best sound from them. The absolute best bet is to suspend them from the ceiling. If not, really, spring for the floor stands that are made for them. If you're going to set them on top of an entertainment unit or on end tables, you probably shouldn't get them. Second caveat - 901s really are primarily for stereo music (they're a surround system in and of themselves). While it is technically possible to use them as part of a 5.1 or 7.1 system, it's a major pain to really connect the power equalizer that's an integral part of a 901 setup into a home theater. If you're looking for speakers for a 5.1 or 7.1 setup, Bose is still the way to go, but get yourself some 301s, or look around for some used 601s or 701s. Anyway, get your 901s set up correctly and prepare to be blown away. And your audiosnob friends will probably razz you about buying into the Bose marketing machine, but just challenge them to bring their speakers over, put on some Bach organ works, and let them go head to head, and see if they're still spouting this no highs and no lows, Bose-is-just-hype junk. Yes, I agree, if Bose didn't spend so much hawking their Wave radios (which I'll agree with you - a 350-500 clock radio???) they could probably sell their real speakers more cheaply. But IMHO, a pair of 901s is an investment you and your ears will never regret. I've loved mine for almost two decades now. Note: I have never received any money from Bose. Quite the opposite. These are some really wonderful speakers. I auditioned literally dozens of speakers from Polk, Klipsh, Energy, B&O etc. Some of the ones I tested were 10 times the price of these Polks and even excluding price considerations, these were the best I heard (I even enjoyed them more than the more expensive Polk LSi Series).

In the past, I would have said that I prefer loudspeakers with a more rounded, mellow, laid-back sound as opposed to ones that are a bit more forward and precise, but the RTi A7s changed my mind. They are not at all harsh or bright, and while they are very precise, they're not at all fatiguing to the ear. To my ear, these speakers offer a fantastic listening experience for both music and home theatre. And, while you're not buying speakers to look at them, you'll be happy with the real wood finish and superb craftsmanship of the cabinets as well.

Of course, sound quality is somewhat subjective, so you should listen for yourself if you can. However, there's a good reason why these speakers are sold out and back-ordered all across the country: they're really that good. If you can actually get your hands on them, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Just for reference: I use these about 70/30 for music/TV. I have an Onkyo 876 powering these speakers and have them paired with the Polk MicroPro 1000 Sub, Polk CSi A4 Center and a set of Polk RTi A3s for the surrounds. You don't have to source all your speakers from one manufacturer or series, but the Polks are all "timbre-matched" to ensure seamless sound. (Speakers have "accents" and in some cases--particularly with the fronts and the center channel--mix-and-match speakers can sound harsh). I bought 5 of these for my home theater system and I'm reasonably satisfied with them. If you turn off the high-frequency enhancer on the front of the speaker, they're a much flatter speaker, which is good. My one complaint is that they seem to drop off around 200Hz, which leaves an annoying hole in the sound between the bottom range of these speakers and the top range of where your subwoofer kicks in. I guess that's pretty common amongst consumer level speaker systems in general. Bose systems are way worse in this regard, which seem to have the entire midrange scooped out. Still, if you can get past this and supplement with a high quality sub with your crossover point set to the top of the capable range, it should sound pretty rich.

In my pursuit of audiophile quality nirvana, after going through many name brand speakers over the years, the Axioms have hit the mark ! Here are the reasons, and not just technical ones.

Now, how do the M3ti Axioms perform? Without getting too technical, they are musical sounding when they should be and can also reproduce dvd surround sound effects with astounding accuracy, realism and ease.I have used both analog and digital sources and have found the clarity and detail to be very satisfactory and even surprising at times. What's amazing is the size of the cabinet enclosures.As Yoda would probably say,"Size matters not !"---and he's right.However, laws of physics and sound dictate that in order to really get the most out of the listening experience is to mate these with a subwoofer. On their own, they still reveal remarkable highs and mids and an acceptable level of bass.With or without a sub, the real test is to just close your eyes and LISTEN ! The stereo imaging is impeccable.The mids and highs are smooth, but not too neutral or warm, or dull sounding.The titanium tweeters offer a silky rich characteristic but nothing to give you ear fatigue. The midrange is a bit punchy(but by no means artificial or overemphasized) and well pronounced (at times I felt like I was listening to a 3-way speaker system)! When placed on a pair of speaker stands, the music floats in the air and never is there any hint that the sound is coming from a pair of small boxes; due to the special wedge-shaped design this practically eliminates that "boxy" cabinet resonating sound found in cheaper made speakers.The sub I am currently using is a Velodyne CHT8. All three speaker units integrate seamlessly. I often forget I'm listening to a couple of shelf speakers and a sub. The sound quality is more like a couple of mid sized floor units!There is no sonic strain that I could detect when playing them loud. One must also keep in mind that loud is not necessarily a trait of audiophile quality; they must also be able to reproduce the most subtle and minute nuances as well with great clarity and detail. The M3ti's accomplish this very well indeed.I can leave the room and walk into the kitchen or another adjacent room and the clarity can be heard versus a muffled sound from other lesser speakers. There is no colored or saturated sound as many other speaker companies try to introduce into their bookshelves to make them sing like tower speakers---those often end up having a very "phony" sonic quality. With the Axiom M3ti's,classical guitar strings have that natural and crisp "plucking" and airy characteristic along with the proper acoustical characteristics that emanate from such an instrument (same for a harp). Bongos and congas present themselves with such vividness (you can almost see the peformer tapping or pounding on them and hear their finger tips and palms striking the skins). Female vocals are very natural and soothing(I could hear words pronounced so crytal clear , even ending consonants on words that with my old speakers used to roll off or just cut off and disappear). I'm hearing details I never heard before.Period. Male vocals may have a little thinness to them but not enough to make a major difference or to detract from the overall grand musical presentaion.

The looks (from four wood veneer colors to choose from to special color customization), the sound quality all speak in volumes (no pun intended) of the technological thought, design, detail, and craftsmanship that has gone into the Axioms.I personally chose the Mansfield Beech with black grills; I love the black and light wood contrast;it blends in very well with my surrounding rustic furniture.I really deliberated for awhile between the Beech veneer and the Boston Cherry (the BC has a very elegant and expensive look, but nothing I have furniture or decor-wise would match).There is a much lighter wood color, I believe maple, but it reminded me of a piece of furniture that still needs to be stained and worked on---it just looked "unfinished" to me.Anybody who appreciates high end sound but says they don't care what the speakers look like is lying; Once you look at the complete Axiom line, they have a very classy and appealing look that should suit and satisfy anyone's home furnishings and decor. There's an overall contemporary elegance to their cabinet designs.Again, The prices are affordable. This is an awesome message that conveys to people desiring a step up into the world of audiophile quality speakers that you don't have to break the piggy bank or dip into the kids' college fund. Shipping is via Fed Ex to most states and is very fast---my speakers arrived from Canada to Arizona in 2-3 days tops ! These have definitely more than just wet my appetite; In time, I will also look forward to purchasing their tower speakers as well. If you're looking for compact, attractive speakers that sound great, it's hard to do better than the Mirage OS3. (The OS3 series are the third generation of Mirage's well known Omnisat speaker.) They are very clear and open, without any of the boxiness or dull sound that conventional compact speakers often have.

The OS3s are an especially good choice if you're looking for speakers for a room that isn't a dedicated home theater with the recommended layout. That is, if you have an irregular room, multiple seating areas, or a room you use for more than just watching movies and listening to music, the OS3s do an amazing job of filling the room with nice sound. Many conventional speakers are directional, so they only sound best at one "sweet spot" in the room. Omnidirectional speakers such as these, on the other hand, spread sound into a large area (or in technical terms, they have very wide dispersion). That's part of how these little speakers fill the room with sound.

You can use these in any speaker position (front, left, center, surrounds), or combine them with the matching Mirage OS3-FS floor-standing speakers and Mirage OS3-CC Center channel speaker in any combination.

With 8 ohms impedance, they are compatible with any receiver/amplifier. The 89db sensitivity means they will be easy to drive - they don't need an excessive amount of power to produce sound. But with power handling of up to 150 watts, they can produce a lot of sound.

The changes from the V2 version are mostly cosmetic - Mirage knew they could sell a lot more of these if they offered a gloss black or white finish. There are a few small technical changes as well - ribbed surrounds, and some other small changes in the drivers. (The floorstanding versions have a few more changes.)

A couple things to note in thinking about whether they are right for you:

- The OS3s are very small for the sound they produce, but they aren't tiny speakers at 5-1/4"W x 8-1/4"H x 6-1/8"D. Look at the dimensions, and find something about that size at home to give you an idea of how they'll fit in. (Mirage does make the smaller Mirage Nanosat Prestige satellite speakers (in black, white, or rosewood) and Mirage MX satellite speakers (black only). While they're nice, they don't quite have the performance the OS3s have. But they are very popular due to their size.)

- Alternatively, if you have space, use these just as satellites and get the FS (floorstanding) and center speaker that perfectly match these.

- If you have a room with lots of very hard surfaces (all glass and walls, not much drapery and carpets) there may be a lot of sound reflections in the high end from these omnidirectional speakers, so they may sound "bright" or a bit harsh in your room. Getting them placed right (away from walls and windows) might help reduce that, but they still might not be the best choice in such a room.

- Despite their amazing ability to fill a room, as with all speakers placement relative to where you're listening from is essential to getting the best sound. You need to be able to look into the speaker from where you're sitting for it to sound best.

First off, let me comment on the incredible service of Amazon, and Crutchfield, the company I bought this sub from. The subwoofer arrived defective, and Crutchfield took it back and credited my account within 1 day of receiving the item back. Absolutely first rate service.
Now about the subwoofer. I originally wanted the Mirage S-12 subwoofer, but that has been discontinued (I have since found one). The reviews I read of the S10 stated that it was big enough for most rooms. This may be true, but Mirage itself states that its a great sub for "small to medium sized rooms". Please go with this. I have a large room (maybe 20x20), and although the S10 sounded excellent, it just couldn't handle the large open-ended room that I have sufficiently. That said - the S10 is one of the best subs I've ever heard. Its clean, undistorted, and gets deep. Again, for a small to medium-sized room, this will be all the sub you need. The controls are conveniently located on the front of the unit so you don't have to keep getting behind it to tweak it, but you have to remove the grill cover to access them. This is a very small factor (just leave it off until you are done tweaking). The unit itself is classy looking. Instead of the usual black gloss look, it comes with a nice black ash wood grain. Mirage stands for class so don't worry here.
As of now, this is the biggest sub that Mirage makes - and its a shame because as I said, the S12 is absolutely amazing as is the S10.
The sub performs incredibly well on both music and movies, but after repeated testing, I'd say that it excels in the home theater aspect (there is more bass in movies than in music). Do not fear as it makes your musical system come alive as well. I have heard things now that I've never heard before, and I am actually replacing a Mirage sub (BPS-150) with this one. Hello, I hope this review can help... I have several sets of Tickets in my house and they are each set up with a Martin Logan Dynmo sub. Running off a mere 50 watts. One is a sonos amp and the other Niles multi room amp. Both sets up are a hoot... Having been in to Hi Fi for most of my life.. I often have a hard time explaining martin logans.. this case is no different... I feel the Tickets have such a natural sound to them.. that frankly they are hard to describe.. other than natural or smooth.. I really like them so much i have since added many Martin Logan systems around the house... yes.. even the master bath. the kitchen has the big brother to the tickets... the Passages... even with no sub.. they sound great...

The install is very easy (so long as you remove any foil backed insulation:) the templete was right on.. and the instructions were great.

There are some that have paintable grills and some are cloth so be carefull whick ones you pick.

Ask me if i would buy again??? well i did... and again and again... if you saw my house you would think my last name was Martin or Logan... well its not.... I have found that I was able to get some Polks for the kids room that for the money sound very very good... But if you are Mommy or Daddy... get the Martin Logans... I would be shocked if you regret it.

I hope to add a video showing them in the wall... but really would would that do? you need to hear them... sorry no you cant come over.... ;)
