After researching and researching and researching I finally picked the Onkyo HT-S6100 7.1 surround sound speaker package. I love it. I currently have my PS3, Ipod, HDTV, and my HD cable box all hooked up to it!! It's all hooked up in HD and it looks and sounds great with all of them. I had a party at my apartment and was playing my Ipod thru it and it BUMPS. It's really easy to set up (all wires are color coded) and it is really easy to use. Granted I am pretty technically savvy, but even if you weren't I don't the set up and use being that hard. Bought these because the kids go to bed early and the tv is too loud in the living room. We turn the tv volume off and set them on the sides of the sofa to listen quietly. I bought these speakers several years ago to be used as outdoor wall-mounted speakers. They worked out very well for almost a year outside before I took them down and brought them inside due to noise ordinance issues. The sound outside was very good, and handled medium to medium-loud volumes without any trouble, even with the speaker wire running perhaps 40-50 feet. Mounted outside, these speakers dispersed sound very well and I was often asked where the speakers were because the sound seemed to be all around.

I pretty much forgot about these speakers for a few years, and then found myself needing a set of speakers since my son took mine for his room. I dug these out and hooked them up and was surprised at the quality. I wasn't expecting much from a set of indoor/outdoor bookshelf speakers but these exceeded my expectations. I pulled off the grill and looked at the speaker components, and everything was in tip-top shape and very high quality.

These speakers handle mid-range exceptionally well, especially voices, drums, and guitars. Also, even with the volume turned up extremely high the sound remains clear and strong, with little detectable distortion.

Although these handle the higher notes found in classical music very well, they sound very directional due to the small size.

Bass handling was acceptable, but these speakers would benefit from a subwoofer if your music has a lot of bass.

Overall, for bookshelf speakers, these are very impressive for a wide range of musical tastes. I would recommend these if you need indoor/outdoor speakers, have limited space, or want to enjoy quality speakers on a budget. I'm a speaker lover, and not a Bose-hater. Bose makes some incredible speakers: like the 901, some of the best I've ever heard. The Bose Acoustimass series are not very good, frankly, but obviously fine for most people. Missing a significant portion of the midrange is OK, apparently, if they look cool enough. The bass is one-dimensional. If it weren't for an advertising budget, I'm certain no one would own an Acoustimass, since they will lose any head-to-head challenge at almost any price. My sister-in-law gave me her system since she knows I like speakers. I very quickly gave this system to my son for college, since it won't matter if it gets stolen. I got this for $99. refurbished; no tax, free shipping. read all the reviews (here & elsewhere), and seemed like a great deal.

easy setup. i bought an optical audio cable in advance, so could hook that up to my samsung tv. hooked an airport express up to the analog inputs (wireless itunes from my macbook). at first, thought the unit was dead; no audio. turns out the remote did not work. replaced the battery and...still nothing. emailed the retailer. but...bent the battery contacts carefully with a small screwdriver, and now it's working. should not have had to do this.

the unit sounds great. i usually do NOT use the surround gimmick (but it sounds great on "big" movies, ie "the fifth element", etc). remote works ok, it HAS to be pointed in the right place.

what i don't like: when i first took it out of the box, it could sit right up against my tv; but, with the cables (in the back center), it has to stick out a bit. shame the cables weren't on the back to one side. and the silver plate with "vizio" is a mistake; my eye is drawn to it periodically; the unit would be better all black (like a lot of soundbars); i want to watch the tv, not the soundbar. the remote not working, and now, working (but finicky).

still, overall, a great deal (even new at $150). the remote could be better, would be nice to have some eq settings options (even presets like "movie" "stadium" etc), but a great deal overall and worlds better than the internal speakers in most tvs.

3 1/2 stars really (docked a 1/2 for the remote).

EDIT: bumped up 1/2 star. vizio (quickly) sent me a new remote; i also removed the faceplate (and replaced the default 'legs' with small black rubber ones...
and am happy(er)...

I got myself "BOSE Companion 5" 5 days ago in an attempt to improve sound in my TV room. My TV room is longer than it is wider therefore all previous setups with floor standing speakers and surround channels did not work due to the sound bouncing all over the place. I just needed something smaller to improve our TV experience.

BOSS was a logical choice after I have heard my father's Companion 3 performance in his computer setup. The thing is - I already own "Cambridge SoundWorks FPS 2000 Digital" (CSW) 4 speaker surround set I got 9 years ago as a present from my wife "girlfriend back then" It has been performing admirably in my computer room on a 2nd floor to this day.

Back to BOSE: I got my speakers and paired them with IBM T60 laptop hooked up to my TV and Dish encoder/decoder. Ofter playing various audio files/CDs and listening to sound coming from TV and DVDs I was puzzled with luck of "OMG!!!I am blown away by this!!! OMG!!" factor. Something was wrong here. The speakers sounded OK but just OK. I have tweaked various Win 7 settings on my laptop in an attempt to achieve the breakthrough in performance to no avail. I even compared the same CDs and MP3 by listening to them through my CSW rig on the 2nd floor. And again I could not reach conclusive decision since side by side comparison could not be made. Finally I had enough and brought BOSS Companion 5 set to the 2nd floor to meet my workstation and "Cambridge SoundWorks FPS 2000 Digital"+ Soundblaster Live. BOSS speaker set was hooked up to my desktop under a minute and had a first go with Pink Floyd's "Wish you were here" in the CD drive. I turned the lights off and listened to the music. I've caught myself nodding - the performance was good.

Then I switched to the CSW setup and played the same song again and my jaw dropped. The sound was SOOO MUCH BETTER - full of character, warmth and soul. Exactly the qualities another reviewer [P. Lau] described in his post as "`warmth', `soundstage', `smoothness',`less fatigue'." These qualities were missing from Bose Companion 5 reproduction of the sound. This could be due to the fact that it is a new system which does not have a lot of "burn in" time yet or it could be something else. Nonetheless, the difference is profound enough for me to send it back for a refund. I guess I must give Bose another shot some other time. Once again they did not sound bad, no no, they sounded OK but just not better than Cambridge SoundWorks FPS 2000 I already own. I might have kept them if they weren't caring BOSE name and were under $99 or I did not have a chance to compare them to my existing system.
