These are decent little numbers that had put up with the abuse of being in a college apartment. I use them as my surrounds in a 5.1 channel system, and could not ask for much more! I probably would not use these as my primary L/R channels, but otherwise fine!Get more detail about MTX Monitor 5i 5-1/4" 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair.

Save Boston Acoustics DSi460 In-wall speakers
Great speakers, easy to install. Only thing I would say is that if you are going to paint the grilles to match your walls etc., be very careful not to use too much paint. I used the same latex paint I had used on my walls, thinned out a bit and even that was too much, as it clogged the speaker grilles holes. I had to completely redo, and went with a krylon spray can which worked excellent. Speakers sound as good as the free standing paradigms they replaced. Cheap Bose 901 Direct/Reflecting Speaker System - Walnut
I bought a pair of 901 Series VI back in 1990, from the PX on post in Bamberg, Germany. I didn't really know much about A/V equipment then, but I figured, Hey, they're expensive, they must be good. I was right on both counts. And 19 years later, they still sound as good as they did the day that I bought them. While I certainly haven't listened to every high end speaker out there, I don't think one can do much better. Yes, you have plenty of people out there that'll spout off the quip, No highs, no lows - must be Bose. I couldn't disagree more. Most of these people compared the 901s to the speakers they bought only at the store and never looked back. But at most A/V stores, A. the 901s usually aren't set up like they need to be for their optimum sound, and B. yeah, their speakers might have sounded pretty good directly in front and center of them - the proverbial sweet spot - but did they compare them from the back of the room? The corner of the room? Probably not. That's the first caveat, though. When you get your 901s, read the manual. Twice. And get out a measuring tape. 901s have to be placed fairly precisely to get the best sound from them. The absolute best bet is to suspend them from the ceiling. If not, really, spring for the floor stands that are made for them. If you're going to set them on top of an entertainment unit or on end tables, you probably shouldn't get them. Second caveat - 901s really are primarily for stereo music (they're a surround system in and of themselves). While it is technically possible to use them as part of a 5.1 or 7.1 system, it's a major pain to really connect the power equalizer that's an integral part of a 901 setup into a home theater. If you're looking for speakers for a 5.1 or 7.1 setup, Bose is still the way to go, but get yourself some 301s, or look around for some used 601s or 701s. Anyway, get your 901s set up correctly and prepare to be blown away. And your audiosnob friends will probably razz you about buying into the Bose marketing machine, but just challenge them to bring their speakers over, put on some Bach organ works, and let them go head to head, and see if they're still spouting this no highs and no lows, Bose-is-just-hype junk. Yes, I agree, if Bose didn't spend so much hawking their Wave radios (which I'll agree with you - a 350-500 clock radio???) they could probably sell their real speakers more cheaply. But IMHO, a pair of 901s is an investment you and your ears will never regret. I've loved mine for almost two decades now. Note: I have never received any money from Bose. Quite the opposite. And if anyone out there wants to call Bose's Wave radios, center channel speakers, or cube systems underwhelming, I will agree with you.Get more detail about Bose 901 Direct/Reflecting Speaker System - Walnut.

Buying Polk Audio TC265i Rectangular 6.5-Inch 3-Way In-Wall Loudspeaker (Single, White)
I have these speakers installed as the left, right and center channels in my home theater 7.1 setup. By no means am I an audiophile expert, so my review is highly subjective. Based on the role that these speakers play in my home theater, I can't think of any negatives associated with the sound quality.Get more detail about Polk Audio TC265i Rectangular 6.5-Inch 3-Way In-Wall Loudspeaker (Single, White).
Buy Mirage Nanosat Prestige Single satellite speaker with high-gloss finish Black
I bought these for dual purposes; to improve audibility in my home theater setup, and to allow me to listen to music through that setup without being frustrated by the typical home theater's audio quality. These are superb for both uses. They give an open, clear, balanced sound no matter where you sit. They give excellent audio detail. You hear things in the music you did not know were there. They have a 'precise' sound. My main speakers are Mirage OM-9's, they were 3K and the top of their line when I got them. These speakers with my home theater subwoofer are quite close and I don't lose much except a bit of base tightness when I move from one system to another. If you're looking for clean, detailed, precise sound, I recommend these very highly.Get more detail about Mirage Nanosat Prestige Single satellite speaker with high-gloss finish Black.

Purchase Polk Audio RTI A7 Floorstanding Speaker (Single, Black)
These are some really wonderful speakers. I auditioned literally dozens of speakers from Polk, Klipsh, Energy, B&O etc. Some of the ones I tested were 10 times the price of these Polks and even excluding price considerations, these were the best I heard (I even enjoyed them more than the more expensive Polk LSi Series).
In the past, I would have said that I prefer loudspeakers with a more rounded, mellow, laid-back sound as opposed to ones that are a bit more forward and precise, but the RTi A7s changed my mind. They are not at all harsh or bright, and while they are very precise, they're not at all fatiguing to the ear. To my ear, these speakers offer a fantastic listening experience for both music and home theatre. And, while you're not buying speakers to look at them, you'll be happy with the real wood finish and superb craftsmanship of the cabinets as well.
Of course, sound quality is somewhat subjective, so you should listen for yourself if you can. However, there's a good reason why these speakers are sold out and back-ordered all across the country: they're really that good. If you can actually get your hands on them, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Just for reference: I use these about 70/30 for music/TV. I have an Onkyo 876 powering these speakers and have them paired with the Polk MicroPro 1000 Sub, Polk CSi A4 Center and a set of Polk RTi A3s for the surrounds. You don't have to source all your speakers from one manufacturer or series, but the Polks are all "timbre-matched" to ensure seamless sound. (Speakers have "accents" and in some cases--particularly with the fronts and the center channel--mix-and-match speakers can sound harsh). Hope this is helpful.Get more detail about Polk Audio RTI A7 Floorstanding Speaker (Single, Black).
Order KEF iQ90DA Floor Standing Speaker (Single, Dark Apple)
They don't sound as good as my XQs but they basically have the exactly the same driver for a lot less money. Go to the KEF site for the Specs. After owning these for a few months I am very happy with them for the price I paid. They look like real wood. I crank up very high "VERY HIGH" and hear very little distortion to none at extreme levels. I like KEF's for many reasons. They are well engineered, well designed, and should give you quality sound for years to come. I am using these in a 7.1 Home theater/ media-room setting along with 2-Kef's down-firing subs, 1-center XQ-50, 2-XQ-20's front 2-Kef's DIPOLE sides 4-3005 Satellites rear and these on front along with the XQ's. I know you shouldn't mix and match speakers but it still sounds great to me. I am using along with a Denon AV/receiver.Wither your listening to music or movies it is a good performer.Get more detail about KEF iQ90DA Floor Standing Speaker (Single, Dark Apple).

Where To Buy Boston Acoustics HS 40MDNT Midnight (Ea) Horizon Series 2-Way Loudspeaker
my old BA's blew a woofer (after over 15 years!) and I finally replaced them and remembered why I ditched TV - man they fill the room sweetly with music. I wish I'd had replaced them earlier. Note they they are sold as single speakers, not in pairs - that was weird - wish I'd have known when I ordered - made a sucky christmas present and I had to go back and order another. The first vendor didn't have anymore so I ordered the 2nd from another vendor and they lied about it being new - but it still sounds delicious.Get more detail about Boston Acoustics HS 40MDNT Midnight (Ea) Horizon Series 2-Way Loudspeaker.
Shop For Polk Audio TC65i Rectangular 2-way In-Wall Loudspeaker (Single)
I bought 5 of these for my home theater system and I'm reasonably satisfied with them. If you turn off the high-frequency enhancer on the front of the speaker, they're a much flatter speaker, which is good. My one complaint is that they seem to drop off around 200Hz, which leaves an annoying hole in the sound between the bottom range of these speakers and the top range of where your subwoofer kicks in. I guess that's pretty common amongst consumer level speaker systems in general. Bose systems are way worse in this regard, which seem to have the entire midrange scooped out. Still, if you can get past this and supplement with a high quality sub with your crossover point set to the top of the capable range, it should sound pretty rich.
I'm a professional movie mixer and I work daily on speaker systems that cost more than a nice house, so I have high standards, but for a modest, low-profile home theater setup these sound pretty good. Get more detail about Polk Audio TC65i Rectangular 2-way In-Wall Loudspeaker (Single).
